Moment is an iOS audio journaling app built around one core belief: your journal is yours alone. We designed Moment so that your thoughts, recordings, and reflections stay on your device. This Privacy Policy explains what data Moment collects, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Moment has no user accounts, no cloud sync, and no server-side storage of your content. Your journal entries never leave your device.
On-Device Data Storage
All of your data is stored locally on your iPhone. This includes:
- Audio recordings (saved in AAC .m4a format)
- Transcriptions of your recordings
- Journal entry metadata (dates, durations, tags)
- App preferences and settings
Moment does not operate any servers to store your personal content. There is no cloud sync, no backup to our servers, and no way for us to access your journal entries. If you delete the app, your data is removed from your device entirely.
No Account Required
Moment does not require you to create an account, provide an email address, or sign in with any service. You can use the full app without sharing any personal identifying information with us.
Speech Transcription
Moment uses Apple's Speech framework to transcribe your audio recordings into text. This processing happens entirely on your device using Apple's built-in speech recognition engine. No audio data or transcription results are sent to Moment's servers or any third-party service as part of this process.
Transcription quality depends on your device's capabilities and the language models available through iOS. Moment requires iOS 17.0 or later to take advantage of Apple's on-device speech recognition improvements.
Notifications
Moment uses local push notifications to remind you to journal. These notifications are scheduled entirely on your device using iOS's built-in notification system. They are not sent from a remote server, and no notification data is shared with us or any third party.
You can configure or disable notifications at any time through the app's settings or through iOS Settings.
Analytics
Moment uses TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service, to understand how the app is used in aggregate. TelemetryDeck is designed to collect no personally identifiable information (PII).
The analytics data we collect includes:
- General usage patterns (which features are used, session frequency)
- Device type and iOS version (in aggregate)
- App version information
This data is used solely to improve Moment and is never used for advertising, tracking, or profiling. TelemetryDeck does not use cookies and does not track users across apps or websites. For more information, see TelemetryDeck's Privacy Policy.
Crash Reporting
Moment uses Firebase Crashlytics by Google to collect crash reports and diagnostic data. This helps us identify and fix bugs to keep the app stable and reliable.
Crashlytics may collect:
- Crash logs and stack traces
- Device model and operating system version
- App state at the time of a crash
Crashlytics does not collect the content of your journal entries, audio recordings, or any personal content. For more details, see Firebase's Privacy Policy.
Subscriptions & Payments
Moment offers optional premium features through in-app subscriptions. All payment processing is handled entirely by Apple through StoreKit. Moment does not collect, store, or have access to your payment information, credit card details, or Apple ID.
Subscription management, billing, and refunds are handled through your Apple ID account. For questions about payments, please contact Apple Support.
No Ads, No Tracking, No Data Sales
Moment does not display advertisements of any kind. We do not use advertising SDKs, tracking pixels, or fingerprinting techniques. We do not build user profiles, and we do not sell, rent, share, or trade your personal data with any third party for any reason.
Your data is not our product. Moment is supported by optional subscriptions, not by monetizing your information.
Third-Party Services
Moment integrates with the following third-party services, each with a specific and limited purpose:
- Apple Speech Framework -- On-device transcription (no data sent externally)
- TelemetryDeck -- Privacy-focused, anonymous usage analytics
- Firebase Crashlytics -- Crash reporting and stability diagnostics
- Apple StoreKit -- Subscription and payment processing
No other third-party services have access to your data.
Data Retention & Deletion
Since your journal data is stored only on your device, you have full control over it at all times. You can delete individual entries from within the app, or remove all data by deleting the app from your device.
Aggregate analytics data collected by TelemetryDeck and crash data collected by Crashlytics are retained according to those services' respective data retention policies and cannot be linked back to you as an individual.
Children's Privacy
Moment is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since Moment does not require an account and stores data only on-device, no personal information about any user is collected or stored on our servers.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the app or applicable laws. When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
For significant changes that materially affect your privacy, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you through the app or our website.
